Like the nervous system, the human endocrine system lets us to send signals throughout the body. It provides information about the internal and external environment. It also sends signals to produce a coordinated response. These signals are hormones. Hormones are chemical molecules released directly into the blood to be carried around the body to activate responses in specific cells that are found in target organs. They are produced in endocrine glands. Hormones activate responses in specific cells by diffusing out of the blood - they bind to specific receptors in the membranes or in the cytoplasm of cells in target organs. The binding of the hormone to its receptor stimulates a response in the cell Comparing Nerves and Hormones Compared to the nervous system, the effects of hormones are much slower, longer-lasting and more widespread. For example, changes in puberty (which occur over a very long time) are caused by testosterone and oestrogen. However, hormones can also act quickly. The best example is adrenaline - the hormone that prepares you for fight or flight within seconds. Hormones help keep the conditions of your body constant - i.e. maintain homeostasis. Endocrine glands Different endocrine glands produce different hormones. Let's discuss the main endocrine glands: The pituitary gland is in the brain. It is also called the 'master gland' because it releases many hormones that act on other glands to control the release of other hormones. The thyroid gland is in the neck. It produces thyroxine which is a hormone that regulates things like metabolic rate and heart rate. The adrenal gland are on top of the kidneys. They produce adrenaline (among other hormones) to prepare your body for stress. The pancreas is near the stomach. It is necessary for the regulation of blood glucose levels because it produces insulin - this hormone allows cells to take in glucose. The ovaries produce oestrogen and progesterone. These are hormones involved in puberty and the menstrual cycle. The testes produce testosterone. This hormone controls puberty and sperm production. Summary 1.
