The inspection machine first checks the integrity of the flange and the plunger with a camera. Then the syringes are conveyed onto the carousel where 7 cameras inspect the syringes for cosmetic defects and 7 cameras inspect them for the presence of particles. The vision system makes use of polarized light to detect the reflecting particles and non-polarized light for the darker particles. Cameras are able to identify defects like fibers, glass fragments, stuck particles, cracks and scratches of size of about 10 microns. Defective syringes are rejected.
