The region was known for its fertile land and strategic location, which made it a center of trade and commerce. One of the earliest civilizations to settle in the Punjab region was the Harappans, who built a sophisticated urban culture in the Indus Valley around 2600 BCE. The region also saw the rise and fall of various empires, including the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta Empire, and the Mughal Empire. In the early medieval period, the Punjab region was ruled by various dynasties, including the Rajputs, the Ghaznavids, and the Ghurids. The region also saw the rise of the Sikh religion in the 15th century, which was founded by Guru Nanak and later led by nine successive Gurus.
