This week's video goes through 6 things most people probably don’t know about the Gillette safety razor!
The sole purpose of the safety razor was to lower the level of expertise required by men to shave safely.
Prior to that, a thorough, quick, and safe shave could only be achieved by professional barbers through the use of a straight razor; a shaving implement that required extensive practice and training to master.
#1 Origins
William S. Henson patented the first razor with a cutting blade perpendicular to its handle in 1847; Henson’s patent was also the first one to feature a protective first comb tooth guard component which could either be attached to his or the common straight razor design.
However, almost 60 years would have passed until King Camp Gillette, would come up with a two-piece safety razor working model; this had a thin, strong, sharp double-edged disposable blade attached to a reusable handle. This reusable handle allowed Gillette blade sales to reach into the millions, almost instantly.
Bonus tip: King Camp Gillette had been assured by the inventor of the disposable Crown Cork bottle cap (William Painter), that a successful invention was one that was purchased over and over again by satisfied loyal customers.
#2 Disruptor
Gillette’s safety razor was a big disruptor of the men grooming category. Daily shaving was far from being a widespread practice in the 19th century and it only became popular during World War I, when men were required to shave daily so that their gas masks could fit them properly.
Standing at his sink in the early morning, King Gillette realized that his permanent straight blade razor was dull and required professional sharpening. Having William Painter’s, Crown Cork’s bottle cap inventor, words echoing in his head; Gillette envisioned a blade, made out of a flattened piece of steel sharpened on both ends, that was cheap and easy enough to produce so that it allowed users to dispose of it once its purpose had been fulfilled.
#3 Design (components and function)
Safety razors are, in general, composed of four main components: a handle, a plate, a blade or razor, and a cap.
To securely brace the blade in place, safety razors can be found using a two-piece, three-piece, or a butterfly opening mechanism. A two-piece mechanism has its plate fused to their razor handle and it gives users access to its blade, through the twist of a knob; the butterfly mechanism is rarer and it features an all-in-one mechanism (a hallmark of vintage razors), where the blade is the only separate piece that can easily be replaced; as for the three-piece mechanism, this tends to be the most common opening mechanism around and it consists of a handle with a head twisted onto it; this head holds a cap and plate with its razor between them.
Furthermore, each of these opening mechanisms can also be divided according to the number of sides their razors have exposed for shaving. These can either be single or double-edged and they have one or two-sided facing razors, respectively. Single-edged razors have a long one-sided straight razor segment, while double-edged ones have two curved razor sides opposing each other.
#4 Materials
As a general rule of thumb, safety razors tend to be made out of metal; its strength and durability make it the most suitable candidate to hold a razor in place even in one of the most severe daily use scenarios where they are maneuvered by their users with wet and soapy hands.
#5 Brand as a product category
However, there is still one question hovering in everyone's mind… Why has the Gillette brand become so ubiquitous to the point it ended up lending its brand name to its own product category?
Well, that was all due to a combination of factors:
1 - Gillette was the first safety razor to come up in the market.
2 - It had, during World War I, an amazing increase in customers' loyalty after having the U.S. Government issuing their safety razors to their entire armed forces.
3 - To top this up, Gillette also made use of a clever sales strategy, by selling their razors at a loss but having an incredible profit margin on the disposable blades sold afterward.
#6 promise
From the first King Camp Gillette prototype to today’s ProGlide Shield™ lubrication technology, Gillette has constantly been at the forefront of shaving innovation. The brand keeps delivering on the promise made, over a century ago by its founder, of “improving razors designs until no further improvement can be made”.
From its origins to its promise, going through the disruption it caused to the world, alongside its design, materials, and what led its brand to become its very own product category; these were 6 facts about the Gillette safety razor that you were probably not aware of. Md2URbk0uUY |
