The tumour cells have a mask on top of them and they pass through as a normal cell when the immune check mechanism comes into play. Because of this, the immune system confuses it to be a normal cell and hence it is not removed from the body thereby going away without killing it. The researchers were able to identify that if the cancer cell is unmasked, it will become susceptible to the immune system. Then, our own immune system will be able to identify and kill the cancer cells growing in our bodies. This would not need any extraneous processes like chemotherapy, etc. Immunotherapy activates the immune system using a specialized, targeted agent to kill the cancer cells.
