Education enriched by global learning experiences UC Davis has a vision to provide a global education for all students, preparing them for an interconnected and interdependent world. We will forge multiple pathways to ensure all students are enriched by global learning opportunities and engagement. Both abroad and at home, this includes living/learning communities that build lifelong connections among culturally diverse international and domestic students and service learning and research opportunities that bring a globalized curriculum to life through hands-on engagement with world challenges. Service learning: The opportunity for global good Imagine Ananya, an MBA student who comes from India to UC Davis with a dream of owning her own design business. A seminar on global start-up ventures sparks her interest in the economic impact of micro-enterprises in developing nations. With her faculty advisor’s encouragement, she applies for a service learning fellowship that takes her to a classmate’s community in Peru, where she helps a group of weavers develop a business model and streamline production. Inspired by her experience, she now plans to launch an Indian textiles micro-enterprise that will inspire others in turn—from empowering women entrepreneurs in her home country to motivating a new generation of Aggies to pursue social change on a global scale. Ananya’s path—transforming her dream from personal passion to global good—has been paved by the intercultural research and service learning opportunities she has gained at UC Davis, where she is building the knowledge and experience to lead in a global world. UC Davis is forging pathways to open the world’s doors for every student. Building global learning into the academic curriculum—on and off campus—is key to this vision. We will integrate global perspectives across the curriculum so every student understands their field in an international context. We will articulate global learning objectives guiding program development across the disciplines. And we will support every student in pursuing these objectives—from scholarships that ease financial constraints, to study abroad opportunities aligned with degree programs, to virtual technologies that connect students across borders without leaving campus. Co-curricular learning and leadership opportunities that enhance global education and research are also key to this vision. We will establish global living and learning communities that foster understanding and lasting relationships among students of diverse backgrounds, and we will create global leadership programs that tap the rich intercultural knowledge across our university and our broader communities.
