You will also learn how far to stand away from the ball, how to position your feet and how to position your hands when you hold a putter in your hands. When you putt you can use a narrower stance than you would for a normal golf swing. Instead of putting your feet shoulder-width distance from one another you can put them closer together, at around hips-width distance. The reason for this is you don’t need to transfer your weight when you putt so you don’t need such a stable base. The ball position for putting should be slightly ahead of center, much like it would be whenever using a 6 or 7-iron. Your arms and hands should hang nicely down from your shoulders. To make sure you are not standing too far - or too close - from the ball when you putt you can drop a ball from below your front eye and see where that lands.
