Ricky Harris from Omnia Fishing prefers a longer rod, in the 7'3" to 7'6" range that allows for a long cast and the ability to pickup a maximum amount of line on hooksets. One of the biggest keys to fishing a large hair jig is having a fast gear ratio, something in the 7.1:1 to 8.5:1 range is ideal for picking up slack and setting the hook quickly on big fish that are often a distance from the boat and down into depths up to 25 feet. When fishing offshore in lakes without vegetation or heavy offshore cover, a 12 to 15-pound fluorocarbon line is perfect for allowing the bait to fall quickly and get into the strike zone as fast as possible. If fishing around deep submerged vegetation, we recommend bumping up to 15 to 20-pound fluorocarbon or fishing braided line with a fluorocarbon leader.
