Muslims fast during daylight hours in Ramadan and offer nightly prayers as well as study the Quran. But inflation and price rises on essential items - such as fruit and vegetables - are worrying many families ahead of the annual celebration. "People do not have enough money to buy potatoes, onions, and so on, so how can they make purchases for Ramadan," said Karachi resident Sana Bibi. "This is not just a price rise, it is cruelty." Many families have sought out assistance from local charities in order to get enough food for Ramadan. Various organisations offer food, clothing and money for those below the poverty line. Security has also increased in Karachi - the country's largest city - ahead of Ramadan, with armed guards manning checkpoints and searching vehicles.
