| Video Discription | In 2021, Governor Jay Inslee signed the HEAL (Healthy Environment for All) Act into law at the Duwamish Longhouse in Seattle. Front and Centered was instrumental in passing the HEAL Act, and the law is a great example of creating the conditions that we want to see in governance to hopefully achieve the just outcomes that are rightfully ours. The HEAL Act created and funds an #EnvironmentalJustice, or EJ, Council that will support integrating EJ into state government and advise government agencies on their work to hold them accountable to HEAL. The HEAL Act also enshrines a definition of EJ that explicitly calls for: “prioritizing vulnerable populations and overburdened communities, equitably distributing resources and benefits, and eliminating harm.” The HEAL act is also led by data, in that its work is informed by the #WashingtonState Environmental Health Disparities Map, or EHD Map. The map, which originated at Front and Centered, has now been adopted by the Department of Health and serves as a visual guide that shows where environmental inequities exist in our state. HEAL is the first of its kind. It's a tool that communities can use to create change, and it's also a model for advancing equitable governance to achieve a #JustTransition.
