| Video Discription | What happens at high altitudes, the air is thinner and the ear as you see is a closed chamber. With only one opening on the back side of the ear to the nose through the Eustachian tube. So at high altitudes if you have a cold and a nasal congestion, this Eustachian tube can get clogged. This is a closed chamber. So the pressure is different from the outside compared to the inside of the ear.so there will be pressure onto the ear drum which causes severe pain. Usually this equalizes with yawn or swallow or keep a candy in the mouth and constantly if you suck on it. The Eustachian tube opens and usually it equalizes it and the pain gets relieved. But if you get a bad cold or a running nose. This Eustachian tube is edematous and is usually swollen and the pressure will not get equalized and the pain increases.
