Hey there, golf enthusiasts! Here’s the latest from the golf scene! Thursday morning at The Amundi Evian Championship witnessed the remarkable feat of two holes-in-one. Amateur Chun-Wei Wu set the tone with an impressive ace on the par-3 5th hole, sending her 5-iron 177 yards straight to the pin, marking her first hole-in-one in a major championship. "I didn't actually see it go in," Wu remarked. "I asked my friend, and they said, 'It went in.' I was thrilled! My first hole-in-one in a major. I'm over the moon."
Wu earned a sponsor exemption for this week’s event following her triumph at the 2024 Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific Championship, a title she claimed in early February. This is only her second appearance on the LPGA Tour, with her first being at The Chevron Championship in April, where she unfortunately missed the cut at The Club at Carlton Woods. In her opening round in Evian-les-Bains, France, Wu shot an even-par 71, comprising four bogeys, two birdies, and her remarkable hole-in-one.

Right behind Wu's group, Jodi Ewart Shadoff mirrored the amateur’s success with a hole-in-one of her own on the par-3 16th hole. This marked the 16th ace of the 36-year-old Englishwoman’s career. The LPGA Tour champion executed her shot from 148 yards with a 9-iron on the challenging par-3 at Evian Resort Golf Club, skillfully banking her tee shot off the slope to the right of the green. Ewart Shadoff admitted she hadn’t expected the ball to find the hole, making this a delightful surprise on what had otherwise been a tough opening day for the seasoned player. "I must say, I struck that shot beautifully," remarked Ewart Shadoff, who has racked up five other holes-in-one on the LPGA Tour since joining in 2011. "It started a bit to the right of the pin, so I was hoping for a favorable left kick off the slope. Watching it head straight for the hole, I thought, oh my, this might just go in. My caddie humorously quipped, grab the putter. It was quite amusing."
Ewart Shadoff’s ace carried more weight than simply enhancing her first-round score. Thanks to Porsche's sponsorship of the 16th hole, Ewart Shadoff will receive a €180,000 credit towards a car of her choice, a rare and thrilling bonus on the LPGA Tour, making it a dream come true for her. "This is absolutely phenomenal. Porsche has always been my ultimate dream car," shared Ewart Shadoff. "The moment I realized there was a Porsche on the line, it was clear I'd be aiming directly for the flag. It's truly astonishing, an incredibly cool moment."
Moreover, CME Group will contribute to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on behalf of both Ewart Shadoff and Wu through their CME Group Cares Challenge – Score 1 for St. Jude. This Challenge is a season-long charitable initiative that turns holes-in-one into substantial donations, with a minimum commitment of $500,000 to St. Jude, which is at the forefront of understanding, treating, and conquering childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Every hole-in-one by the players results in a $20,000 donation to St. Jude’s, bringing the 2024 total to a commendable $260,000. Ewart Shadoff and Wu were thrilled to contribute through their superb performances on the opening day of The Amundi Evian Championship. “Contributing to such a noble cause through our game is truly rewarding,” Ewart Shadoff remarked. “It’s a wonderful feeling.” Wu echoed this sentiment. “I had no idea, but I’m delighted to support this,” said the amateur. “It’s truly meaningful.”
These two aces are the seventh and eighth ever recorded at The Amundi Evian Championship since it was elevated to major status. In 2023, three aces were achieved by Saki Baba, Moriya Jutanugarn, and Emma Talley, while Mika Miyazato scored one in 2014. Additionally, in 2013, Katie Burnett and Caroline Hedwall each made an ace.
