I'm a licensed and certified massage therapist with advanced training and hospital based massage therapy. Today I'm here to show you some techniques for foot massage for caregivers. You first want to have your person in a seated or lying position and where they are comfortable. And they're not having any strain in the leg. You first want to hold the person's foot and leg in your hands to get them used to the touch. Next, you want to add the lotion in your hands, warming it up first, and then gently apply from foot to leg using alternating hands. The next technique is prayer and kiss technique, placing your hands in a prayer position, gently stroking from the foot up to the knee. And the kiss position is fingertips lightly rolling back down the leg, ending with one hand on top and one hand on the bottom of the foot. The next technique we're going to use, you're going to place your thumbs on the top of the foot with the rest of your fingers on the bottom. Using light strokes, take your thumbs and an outward position and slowly work up to the toes. And you want to repeat this three times. Next we'll be working on the toes. You want to position your thumb in between the big toe and the toe next to it. With your alternating hand, use your thumbs. And in a circular light pressure, work up the toe. As you reach the tip, you can give it a little squeeze. And then continue on the other toes. And when you have reached the big toe, just alternate your hand. Next, you can repeat the prayer and kiss technique, again ending with one hand on top and one hand on bottom. Next, we're going to be using our thumbs. You're going to be at the bottom part of the foot. And you're going to start in the middle and work your way outward. Again using light pressure, you want to repeat this technique three times. When you're finished with that, use your thumbs again, working in a circular motion all over the bottom of the foot and repeat that three times. After you've finished your circular motion, come to the middle of the foot and press lightly and hold for 10 seconds. Using your fingers with a circular motion, work your way around the ankle bone with light pressure. Finishing up the leg, we're going to use the prayer and kiss technique again.
