| Video Discription | Staying on top of research in the field is always a difficult task. Not only is your field continuously building on top of past research, however, the field is always growing in breadth. Keeping up with scientific research can feel like a challenging unending task. Whenever I go through and read about everything in my field, there is always a new article that pops up the next day that I need to read. Here are a couple of strategies that people use to keep on top of your field: 1. General search. In this type of search, you read broadly within the most prominent journals in your field. This is a good way to gain breadth in your research. 2. Isolation, and targeted search. This is the most common type of search strategy. Once you have a problem to solve with a paper that you are working on, you target the research in that area, and read the available literature in that area. 3. Mimetic search. In this form of search, people focus on the leaders in their field and read the articles that those leaders are reading and citing. 4. No search, focus on the context. This form of search is where you come up with the most creative ideas. When you focus on the context, you can identify novel insights. However, the problem that you get is a shallow understanding within the research stream. My recommendation is to create opportunities that force you to stay on top of research. 1. Have a policy to read a certain number of new articles for a class. 2. Teach courses in fields that are changing rapidly. 3. For every paper you write, have a policy where you scan the latest literature prior to submission.
