Clicking and dragging over various selected elements will combine them. Holding down Alt/Option will put this tool into a subtraction mode where clicking on a shape will remove it from the final artwork. If the newly created object contains a hole, it will technically be a Compound Path. 0:38 - Pathfinder Panel: Compound Path The Pathfinder panel can be found within the Window menu. With multiple elements selected, a Pathfinder section will also appear within the Properties panel. The second button, "Minus Front", will use the front objects to punch a hole through the bottom most object. If the newly created object contains a hole, it will technically be a Compound Path. 1:10 - Pathfinder Panel: Compound Shape Repeating the "Minus Front" process, while holding down Alt/Option when clicking on the button, will create a Compound Shape. Visually, the Compound Shape will be identical to the Compound Path. However, a Compound Shape differs from a Compound Path in that the elements that make up the final object are retained. These elements can be easily manipulated with tools such as the Direct Selection Tool.
