Spending millions of yuan every year, #Buddhist Master Zhixiang in #Shanghai has rescued countless #straydogs and cats since 1993. Now he shelters more than 4,500 dogs and 200-300 cats in a base near his temple despite legal and financial challenges. #animalrescue Zhixiang began his quest in the 90s when he happened to see a cat getting crushed by a car. His temple now houses 500-600 dogs & 200-300 cats. Every day, he gets up at 4am and cleans the animals' home. He wears a mechanic uniform instead of a cassock to do this grueling job. He goes to the local dog shelter every 1-2 days to take in dogs that haven’t been adopted for an extended period. As the number of dogs increases, he has rented a space of 7,000 square meters. Nine workers and several volunteers help him take good care of each dog. His endeavor isn’t cheap. The annual rent is about 1.22 million yuan; dog food, salaries, medical treatment and vaccination, and other miscellaneous expenses all add to the bill. Some of it comes from donations, whereas some come from his fundraising efforts. Many controversies over stray dogs revolve around control and management, but the root of the stray dog problem is abandonment. Zhixiang urges people to take raising pets seriously and respect life.
