The two previously fought on July 21, 2008, at Dream 5: Lightweight Grand Prix 2008 Final Round, where Overeem defeated Hunt in the first round by submission. Hunt started with a heavy leg kick. Blood was pouring out of Hunt’s right leg on a checked kick. Overeem was patient with his strike selection and went to work on Hunt’s lead leg. Hunt got in a strong body kick, with Alistair answering with a jumping front kick to the body. Overeem was put off balance by Hunt's right hand, but didn’t appear hurt, and cracked Hunt with some more kicks. Overeem shot for a takedown but Hunt stuffed it and threw a knee to the body. Hunt backed Overeem up to end the round and had him running away, but Hunt didn’t land anything substantial. In round 2, Overeem connected with a spinning back kick to the body, and then a straight left from the southpaw position. Overeem’s patented uber-knees landed flush on Hunt twice over. Hunt took more knees to the body before they exited the clinch. An elbow had Overeem wobbly and Hunt went on the attack, but Overeem smartly tied Hunt up and landed a sharp elbow across Hunt’s face. Overeem continued with the brutal knees to the body and appeared to be recovered from the elbow that hurt him. However, Hunt cracked Overeem with another good elbow that caught his attention, but Alistair was persistent with the knees in the clinch. Another elbow buzzed Overeem as the round ended. Overeem threw and scored with a right hook but have any follow-up strikes to start round 3. They clinched once more, and that meant more knees to the body from Overeem. After a left elbow, Overem went upstairs with a knee to the head, then another one and Hunt faceplanted. It was a big KO win for Overeem. Hunt left the cage before the official result was announced. |
