| Video Discription | In late 1984, when the first Akula submarine of the Soviet Navy entered the blue waters, it immediately changed the way anti-submarine warfare would be conducted. With the Akula’s arrival the American submarine fleet would no longer enjoy the dramatic undersea advantages they had possessed since the end of the World War II. The Akula, which is Russian for shark, stunned NATO with its high-level of stealth, especially compared to any Soviet submarine before it. Hello & welcome back to your channel Indian Defense Analysis, where we bring to you all the latest development happening in the defence sector. Today, we are going to talk about a very important news which is related to the second Akula class nuclear attack submarine for Indian Navy. As we all know that the Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to travel to New Delhi later this year for his first in-person summit meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We can expect lot defence and Oil & natural gas related deals to be signed between both the nations. But the one deal which is seen very crucial is related nuclear attack submarines. In the battle for undersea supremacy, silence is the key to survival and victory. And as we all know that nuclear attack submarines of SSNs are true submarines with ability to stay and operate under water almost indefinitely; their endurance is limited only by food supplies for the crew. However, in June this year, Indian Navy’s lone SSN was returned back to Russia, leaving a huge capability gap for Navy. And now Indian Navy has two aircraft carriers with No SSNs to be part of their Carrier Strike Group. However, in 2019, India had sealed a $3 billion deal with Russia for leasing another nuclear-powered attack submarine for the Indian Navy for a period of 10 years. Under the deal, Russia will have to deliver the Akula class submarine, to be known as Chakra III, to the Indian Navy by 2025, but still Indian Navy will be without any SSN for next four years. India needs one more submarine for soon to be commissioned INS Vikrant’s carrier strike group. Indian Navy Chief, Admiral Karambir Singh is also backing up this proposal and has discussed the same with his Russian counterpart during his visit to Russia in July this year. However, the obvious query that might come up is why India is leasing the vessel instead of buying them. Its because Nuclear submarine is a highly strategic equipment and selling it can have potential ramifications under NPT(i.e. nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty). Both countries can avoid this by Simple leasing. Apart from this, India is also working towards developing its own fleet of 6 SSNs. A fund of Rs 50,000 crore will be allocated for the developing 3 Nuclear attack Submarines which will be built by DRDO in Visakhapatnam. 95% of the components in the development of the SSNs are going to be indigenous. This is a huge addition to our self-reliant programme, as submarine technologies are complex and will take approximately 7-10 years to build.
