Soldiers have killed at least 17 people in the latest round of continuing clashes between Muslims and Christians. The figures, announced by the Indonesian military, bring to 1300 the total who have died since religious fighting first erupted a year ago. 0.02 Indonesian troops on the streets of Ambon City. 0.05 It's been relatively quiet since the arrival of two battalions of Indonesian reserve forces. 0.11 But the army fear local Muslims may be launching a holy war, or jihad, to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan next weekend. 0.19 Fearing the worst, the Indonesian military have launched a massive sweep of the city searching for weapons. 0.26 The violence which until recently was contained to the island of Ambon has now spread to the North and Central Maluku areas. 0.33 Brutal clashes have became commonplace since the religious fighting started last year. With more provinces calling for separation, Jakarta is keen to re-establish it's central authority. 0.47 Indonesia's former military chief said: due to increasing violence and anarchy the government is working foremost to make sure that law and order is upheld once again in Maluku. 1.01 Thousands of Muslim students marched through Jakarta demanding that the military stop the violence. They say it's already the worst religious conflict in Indonesia's history.
