| Video Discription | Hello! How do you do everyone? Modern aircraft have several types of navigation systems/methods. One of these is the IRS system or Inertial Reference System. There are three of these fitted to the B747, Left/Centre/Right. At the start of the flight, the IRS must be aligned to its actual position using laser gyro systems and other electronics. There aren’t any moving parts per se like old INS systems that aligned a platform. However, the laser ring gyros need to align and detect/sense the True North position and also be set to the latitude in order for accurate Measurements for other flight data. The maintenance manual states that for a full alignment, approximately 17 minutes may be required. In the old days of INS, we set the IRS switch to ‘ALIGN’ first until the countdown was down to zero then moved the switch to NAV. It is still recommended if you are operating from a high latitude airport say above 70 degrees North or South. In most cases, alignment is about 10 minutes.
