When you use the diaphragm properly to breath, you set in motion a beautiful system that unlocks stiffness in the midback and neck and provides stability of thelumbopelvic complex. When you use the Assessory chest and neck muscle to pull the lungs up, you limit your ability to create adequate intro-abdominal pressure to brace your torso under load. Your posture also begins to suffer, and the extra demand of the upper back and neck musculature begins to create stiffness in the upper back and neck. Here is what to look for with a poor (pardoxical) breathing pattern. - Upon inhale, the chest immediately is drawn up. - The abdomen caves in. - Divots above the clavicals can been seen in chronic paradoxial breathing patients. Things to avoid: - Don't force the belly out with muscular contractions. This movement should be passive. As the diaphragm contracts, the abdomen will show 360 degrees of expansion. - Don't try to keep the chest completely still either. If you're taking a deep breath, the chest can move, just not first!
