Barkmann was one of the most notorious and hated prison guards of the Stutthof conc3ntration camp. Her lawyer even admitted that Barkmann was guilty. They had the defense that she must have been mentally ill, stating that "No sane person could have done what she did at the conc3ntration camp". Barkmann and the 5 others had a dark fate ahead. The nature of the hanging was brutal, and very public. It drew a crowd of nearly 200,000 people, some being survivors of the Stutthof camp who had to endure Barkmanns sinister torcher, so they along with many others wanted to see to her end. The women were all put onto truck beds with nooses around their necks, as the trucks would drive off they would fall and gravity would do the trick. For Barkmann, standing with the noose around her neck, the truck would not start, so the crowd mumbled in frustration as she stood there still alive. She was so hated that a former Stutthof camp prisoner actually went right up to her and pushed her off of the truck where she di3d instantly.
