Step 1: Set the pot on a flat surface Set the pot upside down on a flat surface. Tip Use a rubber mat or damp towel to keep the pot from slipping. Step 2: Mark a spot Make a small ding in the pot's surface with a nail to mark where you will drill the hole. Step 3: Drill a pilot hole Make a pilot hole with your electric drill to keep the drill bit from slipping when you make the larger hole. Tip Be sure to use the correct drill bit for the type of pot you are using. Selecting the wrong bit may crack your pot. Step 4: Run cold water Run cold water over your pilot hole. Keeping the pot cool will reduce the risk of cracking the pot. Step 5: Drill the hole Drill the drainage hole with your electric drill, making sure that the drill bit is at a 90 degree angle, perpendicular to the pot.
