(July 30)Prosecutors at The Hague are cheering the arrival of the man some call the 'architect of genocide' during the Balkan war.SOT Serge Brammertz, Chief prosecutor of The Hague Tribunal:"The arrest of Radovan Karadzic is immensely important for the victims who had to wait far too long for this day. It's also very important for international justice because it clearly demonstrates that there is no alternative to the rest of war criminals and that there can't be no safe haven for fugitives." Karadzic (KA'-ra-jich) was flown to the Netherlands Wednesday and taken to this U-N jail.He's facing eleven counts including genocide and crimes against humanity for his alleged role in orchestrating a deadly 44-month siege the left tens of thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats dead.He was arrested earlier this month by Serb security forces who found him in a vastly different state than when he was in power.Experts say it may be difficult for prosecutors to get a conviction and Karadzic's daughter is calling on her father's supporters to rally to his defense.(pause for nat sound)She says she hopes he gets a fair trial and asked all honorable people to help defend him.The trial though could be long in coming as there are several key legal steps before the hearing can begin.Still many survivors of the conflict say it's a relief just to know he is behind bars. ___ ___, The Associated Press. eDUIKJOIAG0 |
