| Video Discription | In this video we show when to pick rhubarb and some tips for growing rhubarb. This is recorded on our allotment in the UK. We have grown rhubarb on our allotment for years and over 3 generations. If you grow a healthy rhubarb plant then you can pick rhubarb when you want to use rhubarb. You do not need to check which month it is. Healthy rhubarb can be grown in the UK on an allotment or garden in the same way. To grow great rhubarb you must first let the plant establish itself. This may take a couple of years. Once it has a good tap root then you can pick rhubarb any month. We still water our rhubarb from time to time and especially after taking a lot of stems. We never pick our rhubarb bare. We always leave a few young stems on the plant as they feed the base of the plant in preparation for next year. If you always do this then each year will produce more rhubarb and you will eventually be taking chunks off to give away and reduce the size of your rhubarb plant. The rhubarb may produce a flower. Different varieties are more likely to flower than others. If your rhubarb does flower then it will put most of its energy into the flower. If you are happy with that then leave it but if you want to pick more rhubarb this year or you want the plant to put more energy into the roots then take the flower off. You can cut it near the base to remove the rhubarb flower.
