The longer-serving players don't much care for his Sargent-Major approach but by retaining Lyall's back room team there is at least some continuity. Macari's first headache is how to solve a problem like Paul Ince. The wantaway midfielder is photographed in a Manchester United shirt but fails his medical and finds himself in limbo. On the pitch only one new signing, Martin Allen, makes a positive impact as the Hammers make a steady start. Ince finally gets his move but he leaves a bitter, bitter taste.
