About this video: The Angel Jibreel and How He Taught The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) How To Perform Salah According to Islamic sources, the Angel Jibreel (as) was given the role of teaching and conveying the message of God to the prophets. He was known by many titles, such as the Holy Spirit and the Archangel Gabriel. In the Quran, the Angel Jibreel (as) was sent to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with the revelation of the verses of the Quran and instructions on how to live a life according to the Islamic faith. Among the instructions given by the Angel Jibreel (as) was the teaching of how to properly perform the five daily prayers, or salah. The sequence of events which occurred during the revelation of salah began when the Angel Jibreel (as) came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) while he was meditating in a cave called Hira, located on the outskirts of Makkah. During his visit, the angel told the Prophet (PBUH) to read. Although the Prophet (PBUH) did not know how to read before this point, he was then able to understand the words that the angel Jibreel (as) spoke and replied “What shall I read?”. The angel then recited the first verse of the Quran: “Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is Most Generous…”. After this, the Angel Jibreel (as) continued to come to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and teach him the verses of the Quran for several years. During these revelations, the Angel Jibreel (as) also taught the Prophet (PBUH) how to duly perform salat, which is the Arabic term for the five obligatory daily prayers. The Angel Jibreel (as) showed the Prophet (PBUH) all the postures of prayer, including standing, bowing, prostrating, and the recitation of various verses from the Quran. Furthermore, the angel also emphasized to the Prophet (PBUH) the importance of maintaining purity while performing salat, especially by washing the face, arms, and legs before each prayer. In order to further emphasize the importance of doing salat correctly, the Angel Jibreel (as) made sure that the Prophet (PBUH) had a deep understanding of the purpose and message of the prayers. Namely, the prayers are opportunities for communicating with God, seeking His guidance, and thanking Him for His blessings. By embracing and promoting the importance of salat, the Prophet (PBUH) was able to spread the knowledge to the rest of the Muslim community. As a result, salat became one of the five pillars of Islam and is now a major part of Muslim life around the world. The teachings of the Angel Jibreel (as) are remembered to this day and it is believed that, through them, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was able to become one of the most important figures in Islamic history. Without his influence, it is very likely that the Islamic faith would not have achieved the same level of adherence and respect as it has today.
