Maria Island is a small island off the east coast Tasmania and accessible by Maria Island ferry from Triabunna which is 70 minutes drive from Hobart. Maria Island is very less visited, secluded and away from the hustle bustle of tourism so you will find very less people on your visit here. Historically, Maria Island is one of the most important Tasmanian heritage convict sites as it was built by convicts in 1800s and was actually a probation centre. What to do on Maria Island? Maria Island self guided walks are the best. I did the Bishop and Clerk Walk and Fossil Cliffs Walk. Maria Island walks range from easy short walks to long challenging walks in Tasmania. It also hosts Tasmanian Devils, wombats, wallabies and a lot of other wildlife. Because you can only walk or take your bicycle on Maria Island, this is probably the best place in Tasmania to experience Tasmanian wildlife. I spent my birthday on this island and this was by far the best place I had been on my Tasmania road trip.
