| Video Discription | An international restoration team has flown into Cairo to help fix the mask of Tutankhamun, one of Egypt's greatest treasures and one of the world's oldest and most famous masks. The boy king's mask grabbed headlines earlier this year after its beard was snapped off and clumsily glued back on by a cleaner at the Egyptian Museum. Now a specialist team from Egypt, Germany and Britain is trying to restore the mask, which in 1922 was found in the Valley of the Kings after laying undisturbed for more than three millennia. Egypt's antiquities minister said the project is not just a repair job. "The damage to the mask might have brought some good after all. King Tut's mask has never been subject to comprehensive scientific studies before. This gave us a chance to do so. To find out how it was manufactured and what materials it is made from as well as to carry out a study for restoration. So all of this is good for the science of antiquities," said Egyptian Antiquities Minister Mamdouh Al Damaty at a press conference on Wednesday. Since May this year the team has been working with microscopic 3D scans and now they are seeking to remove the glue used in the initial repair attempt without causing more damage. They will then work on a new technique to re-attach the beard. "We have not yet developed a new concept because... we have not taken off the beard so far and we need to know the exact situation under the beard. So as soon as we know this, then we will develop a concept, we will present this to the scientific community and then we will decide how to do it," said Christian Eckmann, chief of the international restoration team, stressing that whatever concept is chosen will be developed on the basis of the available facts. To guarantee the best approach, all decisions taken by the scientific committee must be unanimous and investigated thoroughly. The initial plan was to finish the restoration work by the end of the year, but the chief of the committee said they will not let time pressure their operation.
