On a continent where many rulers talk big, live well and amass personal fortunes, Nyerere became a legend thanks to his austerity. VOICE OVER: 00.02 Julius Nyerere was given full state honours with a funeral attended by dignitaries from around the world. 00.07 Among them U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Britain's Princess Anne. 00.15 Sixteen African leaders were there, another 10 sent Cabinet Ministers. 00.19 Julius Nyerere's body lay in state throughout the ceremony allowing mourners to pay their respects. 00.23 - 00.32 SOUNDBITE: (English) "There can be no question that Julius Nyerere was every inch a builder and one of the great leaders of our time." SUPER CAPTION: Madeleine Albright, U.S. Secretary of State Nyerere died last week of a stroke while undergoing treatment for leukaemia in a London hospital. He was 77. Nyerere stepped down in 1985 after 23 years in power. During his rule he undertook the massive task of unifying the 120 different ethnic cultures in his country.
