In this video, I discuss what goes into finding excellent mentors and why mentorship can be such a critical part of medical school/undergrad. Honestly, if you have good mentors, that can take you MUCH farther than grades/MCAT/USMLEs ever could. Mentors have been the reason that I've been able to lead research project, engage in diverse extracurriculars and survive medical school. Establishing a mentoring relationship with a knowledgeable professional can lead to increased success throughout your medical education. Mentoring relationships are particularly important for minority students or students who are in medical schools that do not have a department of family medicine. A physician mentor is a valuable source of information and guidance to help you: 1) Achieve your short-and long-term education and career goals, 2) Attain clinical knowledge and skills, and find research opportunities, 3) Develop your professionalism and communication skills through constructive feedback, and 4) Learn from a positive role model and network with other physicians! Here is another interesting paper that mentions the need for more mentorship in medical school. It is titled: "The Need for More Mentorship in Medical School." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7273374/ Insights: Our study demonstrates the profound impact mentorship has on a medical student’s career. Respondents believed their mentorship experiences strongly impacted their decisions involving rotation choices, residency programs, field of practice, and career trajectory. Participants also believed availability in the amount and quality of mentorship could be improved. The perceived lack in the amount and quality of mentorship may have negative implications on medical students’ career prospects.
