He was high on India’s Draupadi Ka Danda II, a 5,670M or 18,600-foot peak in the Gangotri range of the Garhwal Himalaya, near the Chinese border. The mountain, often called DKD2, is surrounded by intimidating 6,000-meter giants like Thalay Sagar, Shivling, and Meru. Considered a safe zone and avalanche-free area, it is the training spot of India's Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, or NIM for short, one of the country's top climbing schools. Sharma, 23 at the time, began preparing himself some tea as other students around him began waking up. He had joined a 28-day advanced mountaineering course and it had all led to this moment. It was summit day.
