Top view of street STORYLINE: Thousands gathered in Karachi to attend the funeral of slain provincial lawmaker Sajid Qureshi and his son who were both shot dead on Friday. They were targeted when they were returning home after offering Friday prayers at a mosque near his home in the port city's north Nazimabad area. Sajid Qureshi was a lawmaker for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the party that controls Karachi. A complete shutdown of businesses and transport was observed to protest and mourn the killing. The city had a deserted look on Saturday, with empty roads, thin attendance in offices and a complete shutdown of markets and shopping areas. Similar scenes were witnessed in other cities of the province. Karachi has a long history of political, religious and criminal violence. Much of the violence is carried out by gangs allegedly affiliated with the city's main political parties, including the MQM.
