| Video Discription | Sentence dictation builds the student's auditory memory skills as they learn how to hold words of the sentence in their working memory. Sentences can get progressively longer as the student progresses. The teacher should construct the sentences carefully to incorporate skills that need to be practiced, while also ensuring that no "unfair" words are included that the student has not been explicitly taught strategies and skills to use to spell them. Notice that a colored chip is used to represent each word in the sentence. These chips provide a visual and kinesthetic connection. For longer sentences, the chips are divided into phrases. The student repeats the sentence, moving the chips as she says each word. The teacher and student also talk through the meaning of the sentence (who is it about, what happens, when or how, etc.). When the student repeats the sentence correctly, she is ready to write it. The student should use SOS (Simultaneous Oral Spelling technique) when needed. The teacher guides the student through self-correcting any errors using the Socratic method. Notice that the student circles mistakes rather than erasing them.
