The university attracted scholars from as far away as China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. The university was home to 2,000 teachers and 10,000 students. In March 2006, the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, proposed reviving the ancient Nalanda. The #nalandauniversity Bill was passed in 2010, and the university officially began operations on November 25, 2010.
