| Video Discription | (24 Oct 2000) Eng/Ger/Nat In an historic recognition of Nazi crimes, Austria on Tuesday officially established a 6 (B) billion schilling (380 (M) million U-S dollar) fund to compensate thousands of surviving slave laborers in the United States and six Eastern European countries. Austria, the United States and delegates from six eastern European countries (the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine) signed several agreements, which arrange the payments to survivors of Nazi-era forced labour. The 150 thousand survivors will each receive between 20 thousand and 105 thousand Austrian schillings (1250 and 6650 U-S dollars) out of a fund to compensate victims. In return, the pact includes provisions giving Austrian companies legal protection from future lawsuits. The joint signature took place in the "Bundeskanzleramt" the chancellor's office in Vienna. The participants signed the "executive Agreement", a bilateral agreement between Austria and the USA and six further agreements between Austria and a representative from each of the six eastern European states . After the signing ceremony separate talks were held on restitution of property seized by the Nazis from Austrian Jews start. The sad destiny of these people has for too long been covered by the sea of the fear of our history and it was not seriously examined."
