The Jungle - Aayam Artwork Poetry
By Laxmi Prasad Devkota
I’d been crying, letting the tears gush out amid life’s jungle,
I’d been searching in vain for the things my heart desired.
Upon broken hopes lie sad, tear-filled eyes—
Where, oh, where is my heart’s unforeseen despair?
Flaunting its jewelry, Greed masquerading as Temptation
Spoke, “For what reason do you cry?
The Palace of Temptation is charming, I’ll be your queen.”
I said, “By tomorrow it’ll all be dust and ash.”
Kuber spoke, “Take a job, I’ll give you boundless wealth.
My servants are beaming with joy, swinging in golden hammocks.”
I spoke, “Lord of wealth! I know the value of money,
But the freedom of my inner soul—ah, it is priceless!”
Wearing a golden crown, Success came to entice.
“Follow me, my brother. A beautiful chance has arrived.
Come dressed up, and I’ll get you acquainted.”
I said, “I wear rags, but I stand for the truth, brother.”
Dear Power arrived and said, “I’ll give you sweet fruits.”
I said, “My ambrosia comes from serving the people.”
A yogi said, “Attain nirvana, the gates of heaven will open.”
I said, “I have to look after my brothers’ household.”
Indra said, “My palace in heaven is bright and beautiful.”
I said, “I’ve got to light the lamp, the world is still dark.”
Sorrow spoke, “Thorns can prick!” I said, “Flowers will blossom.”
Doubt spoke, “Flowers might not blossom.” I said, “The spring is healthy.”
Life spoke, “War is gruesome.” I said, “Hail the brave!”
Obstacle spoke, “There’s the mountain.” I said, “Touch Heaven’s head!”
Religion spoke, “In which temple will you pray? Come.”
I said, “The place where the brave sacrificed their lives.”
Compassion spoke tenderly, “Why do you cry, then, brother?”
I said, “The time to serve humankind is fleeting.”
“Where are your friends? Who are you with? In which country is your home?
To which city, to which house will you go, traveler, and what message have you brought?”
“My friends are industrious, I have with me my vast courage.
The world is my home, and I bring the message of service to your hearts’ abode!”
