I love many things about the area but I do want to provide an honest perspective for those seriously considering moving to North Idaho. HIGHLIGHTS: Visiting Elk Friends On the way to discuss the issues, the speaker stops to feed some elk at a farm. He notes how cool it is to interact with them. No Central Source for Events It's hard to find out about events, concerts, and activities. He sometimes misses cool events due to lack of publicity. Small towns struggle to centralize this information. Secretive Local Government The local government purposefully keeps things quiet to avoid backlash. This prevents transparency and public buy-in. It risks bad policies being passed without oversight. Secondhand News Due to North Idaho's reputation, news spreads from outside rather than firsthand experience. This makes it hard to discern what issues are embellished versus reality. Boring Without Outdoor Activities Idaho is boring if you don't enjoy outdoor recreation. The inconsistent weather this year provided few chances to enjoy winter sports. No Longer Inexpensive Idaho is no longer an inexpensive place to live compared to historically low home prices. This challenges the perception many hold of moving here. Extreme Weather Fluctuations The weather is extremely variable day-to-day and across seasons. These constant changes test one's mental fortitude. Constant Road Construction Frequent extreme weather and population growth require never-ending road construction projects. Cliquey Community Some Idaho residents are standoffish about making new friends. Transplants can feel lonely if unable to break into social circles. Tourism Tourism boosts the economy but also stresses infrastructure with seasonal influxes.
