The washer would drain during spin, but there was a problem with the transmission not working. This common style of washer has a motor that has two axles. One axle is directly connected to the drain pump, so it allows the washer to drain. The second axle is connected to the transmission with a sacrificial coupling. If the coupling has broken, then the drum will not turn in the spin or agitate cycles. It may barely work in one cycle, or it may just sound like the washer motor is running with no load.
