In it Allama Iqbal asks his Lord for salvation from the predicament that the Muslim world was in. The Ottoman Empire was failing, the power of the once-glorious Caliphate was declining. Closer to home, the sub-continent was also in a political and spiritual struggle. Allama Iqbal witnessed the effects of British colonialism upon the poor people of his country. He also witnessed the rise of deviant sects that aimed to weaken the beliefs of the Ahl al-Sunnah. Amid all this Allama Iqbal reminisces on the great ages of the Muslim world, where lands bowed before the might of the ideal Muslim. He implores God for that zeal again, that fire to be relit. He admits the faults of the Muslims, but accuses God of injustice, that God granted the enemies of Islam victory and wealth despite the loyalty of the Muslims to him. In this he reflects the cry of the average Muslim suffering. In reality, he describes to the discerning the qualities the people have lost and what they should aspire to. Behind it’s supposed blasphemy, the Shikwa is a treasure misunderstood by the people of its time. Allama Iqbal first recited the poem in April of 1911, during a gathering of Anjuman-i-Himayat-i-Islam in Lahore. Many narrow-minded scholars of India accused him of apostasy which prompted him to write the Jawab-e-Shikwa, which is God’s response to the Shikwa. It is Allama Iqbal explaining, in perhaps less ambiguous words, the qualities that will enable Muslims to conquer the world again. This took a long time to do, (3 weeks to be exact) and is probably the biggest video I’ve done. Due to editing problems, the audio doesn’t match the video and I deeply apologise for that.
