| Video Discription | WARNING! GM considers Onstar to be a safety feature. Disconnect it only at your own risk! Although it offers no safety benefit (that I know of) unless you are subscribing and paying for the emergency response service, and it's unlikely anyone who is paying for Onstar is looking to remove it. Onstar is plagued with many privacy and security issues which can be readily researched online. It is for that reason that I do not want Onstar on my vehicle. I actually insisted that Onstar be removed before I made my purchase, but the dealer said it was something they could not do. I backed down knowing that I could find a way to remove it myself and I really wanted the truck. There is no official way to remove Onstar. If GM ever makes it impossible to remove it using unofficial means, I will probably stop buying their cars and trucks. It's the principle of the thing. Onstar also serves as an anti-theft device which is completely worthless. Theives are able to steal Onstar equipped vehicles in minutes. In fact, there have been reports in the news that thieves specificially target Onstar equipped vehicles because it is so easy to disable! If you want security, you must go aftermarket. This is very easy and quick to do. It's actually easier than the previous generation where the connections for the radios are behind the infotainment screen requiring disassembly. On the T1 generation trucks the VCIM (vehicle communications interface module) is located right under the dash with its antenna connections easy to access without any tools or disassembly required. Disconnecing these connections will sever the vehicle's connection to the cell data network which prevents any communication. It will also disable the truck's access to the GPS. This means that some features that some owners might be deleted along with Onstar, such as the factory navigation, compass, and speed limit display. For me however, I have never used the factory navigation. I wish it were possible to option the truck without it. I use a stand-alone, offline, open source, privacy respecting navigation system and have never even accepted the terms of service agreement for the GM navigation. The compass is nice to have but completely unnecessary and I have come to realize that speed limit displays in the vehicle really aren't worth anything. Where I live speed limits are displayed on these handy signs all along the side of the road. No trooper is ever going to let you go for speeding because you show him (or her) your nagivation display indicating a differnet speed limit from what's on the sign. In my experience once your map data is more than a couple of months old, the speed limit display is wrong far too often to ever rely on it. So I'm perfectly happy with it turned off. If I ever do need it my offline navigation has speed limit information, and updates for its database come daily...and are free. U-bVSqBSrbM |
