However, he was understandably fired from the position after gaining notoriety for his naked visage on national television. Robert didn’t care about being fired from his job, because he had already made the decision to dedicate his life to his political activism regardless of the cost. Robert believed in world peace and public nudity, as well as the rights of gay people everywhere. David Niven was hosting the ceremony that Robert streaked during and was about to introduce Elizabeth Taylor. The unplanned event had interrupted Elizabeth’s introduction by David, and Elizabeth was flustered when it was finally time for her to speak her first words before the audience. Although the actress managed to keep her usual cool, she admitted afterward that she had been afraid that she was going to flub one of her lines due to the shock of the event. Robert certainly achieved what he had set out to do with his streaking episode, and used the notoriety to make an unsuccessful bid for the US presidency in 1976. Two years later, he opened up an art gallery in San Francisco meant to showcase unconventional art that was created by gay artists.
