The Parable of the Two Sons Summary (Matthew 21:28–32) After Jesus arrived in Jerusalem near the end of his life, he entered the Temple area and the chief priests and elders confronted him about his authority to teach. Jesus replied asking them about his predecessor, John the Baptist’s authority. Then he shared with them a parable about two sons. A man told his two sons to go out and work in the vineyard. The first son said no, but changed his mind and went to work anyway. The second son said yes, but he didn’t go to work. Then Jesus explained: “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.” The Meaning of the Parable of Two Sons The first son in the parable are the tax collectors, prostitutes, and many sinners who have repented and listened to John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. The second son represents the self-righteous leaders who turned away from their teachings or reject righteous teachers like Jesus and John the Baptist. The lesson for us all is to be willing to change our minds and do as the Lord asks of us. The more we put our faith in our own ideas or goals, the less we will be willing to accept God’s desire for us.
