If we were to do this project again we would use something more like C16 construction timbre so provide the spacing (https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Sawn-Kiln-Dried-C16-Timber---45-x-95-x-2400mm/p/178635) and plane the edge to give a nice flat look. C16 can be found in many sizes so you could bring it out however far required by the hinge and door designs you go for.
