| Video Discription | The castle became the property of the Savoys in 1869 with King Vittorio Emanuele II, who purchased it and also assumed the title of "Count of Sarre". He commissioned further expansions, the raising of the central tower and the construction of the stables, with the intention of transforming the castle into one of the major seasonal residences dedicated to hunting leisure, a well-known passion of his. Regular visitors to Sarre were also the Princes of Piedmont Umberto II and Maria José who, after having the rooms modernized in 1935, used the castle as a seasonal residence for stays dedicated to their numerous Alpine excursions but it was also the place where Princess Maria José took refuge with his children during the most difficult periods of the Second World War. Remaining property of the Savoy family until 1972, the castle was purchased by the Italian state which in 1989 entrusted it to the Valle d'Aosta Region to subject it to a long restoration before opening it to the public.
