One of the biggest hurdles for absolute pitch training is that it is often called “perfect pitch.” The word “perfect” means “with no error.” However, even a possessor of absolute pitch makes errors on tests – just very rarely. Absolute pitch consists of several capabilities. The first – and probably the most important – is accurately singing a named pitch without a reference. I will focus on this ability. To find an effective training method for this ability, we have to look for similar activities. Singing has a lot in common with speaking. You use the same air passages and muscles to produce a sound. But the similarities go further than just breath and vocal muscle control. Singing and speaking also share memory similarities. To speak a word – for example, mother – you execute a series of stored muscle commands. You learn to associate the word “mother” to a muscle command series by hearing and assigning feelings to this association. The same is true for associating a pitch to a name. You must hear the pitch and connect it to the pitch’s name. So, let’s look at how we learn words, and then apply the same techniques to pitch. You learn words in early childhood. First, you utter sounds, and then you try to match the heard sounds – through muscle control – to an internally stored sound-pattern: the desired sound outcome. The successful muscle positions get stored in the long-term memory, along with associations for later recall. Later, you use the stored sound-patterns to form words and sentences. The same process takes place for pitch. The observation that perfect pitch is difficult to acquire after early childhood, brings up the following question: Is it possible to extend the vocabulary in adulthood? For speaking, the answer is yes, because a 20-year-old adult is capable of learning a second language. But to what degree of perfection is this possible? It depends on how we define “perfect.” Expressed in relation to perfect pitch: If it is no longer possible to acquire perfect pitch after a certain age, then conversely this means it is not possible to learn a foreign language “perfectly” after a certain age. In language tests you can reach the “perfect” score even with a small amount of errors. If we interpret “perfect” as “with nearly no errors,” then absolute pitch should also be learnable. That means you must associate a series of muscle commands with a specific named pitch and transfer it to long-term memory. The muscle commands to produce a specific named pitch must be exact enough to reproduce the pitch with a precision better than 50 cents (a half-step has 100 cents). In learning a foreign language, you transfer words into long-term memory by repeating and actively using them. In many cases, a longer stay in a foreign country works very well to perfect the learned language. This is because you use the words in context, and thus start to associate the feelings and related material more deeply. You also get a lot of feedback in common situations. For example, if you are not understood correctly, you need to explain yourself with a second phrase with similar content, or the recipient – to eliminate mistakes – rephrases your pronunciation. Sometimes, you think that you know a word, but cannot recall it immediately from your long-term memory. This is because the word is not associated well enough with a different context. So, to acquire absolute pitch, you need feedback on how well our muscle command series for a certain pitch was transferred to our long-term memory.
