| Video Discription | For the Portsoken Pavilion LWL worked with Kier and Make Architects who designed it. The pavilion is located in Aldgate Square and houses a café which is run as a community enterprise. It sits within a redeveloped garden and seating area being part of a City of London regeneration initiative for the Aldgate district. The pavilion is an asymmetrical design with a multi-faceted stepped roof that is also structural. Fanning upward from three triangular support points the roof forms three angular canopies. Beneath these, exterior walls are made of sliding glass panels allowing the café to open it’s doors to the surrounding public space for meetings, exhibitions and the like. The whole structure was fabricated from multiple pieces of steel at the LWL workshops over an internal supporting jig structure. Made from weather steel, the fabricated sections were left outside to naturally weather over the winter period prior to installation. The resulting roof has a beautiful oxidised appearance and is corrosion resistant. It has also been designed to shed rainwater via the three main support points where the water runs straight into a drainage system beneath the ground. Video by Crate47.com 29YV8MbyQT4 |
