Pillai, talked about his book 'False Allies: India’s Maharaja’s in the Age of Ravi Varma’. In this clip, he notes that during the British Raj, 40% of the Indian subcontinent was under princely states. The word ‘indirect rule’ eclipses the fact that these states were under ‘Indian rule’ with native rajas, ministers and bureaucrats. Pillai claims that the experience of colonialism for this part of India was very different from what was happening in ‘British India’, because the ‘white man’ did not have a direct presence in these states. The author also mentions his grandmother, who grew up in the princely state of Travancore, and adds that in that state, there was no political figure higher than the Maharaja! He also highlights why he chooses to call the rulers of these states ‘False Allies’ and talks about misconceptions and stereotypes associated with these native Kings. Manu S Pillai - is a critically acclaimed writer and historian who has authored The Ivory Throne, Rebel Sultans, The Courtesan, the Mahatma and the Italian Brahmin, and most recently, False Allies: India’s Maharajahs in the Age of Ravi Varma. He formerly worked as the chief of staff to Shashi Tharoor and has won the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar. Shashi Tharoor a third-term Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, is the bestselling author of twenty-three books, both fiction and non-fiction, besides being a former Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and a former Minister of State for Human Resource Development and for External Affairs in the Government of India.. He has won numerous awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Crossword Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2019, he was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in the category of English Non-Fiction for his book, An Era of Darkness.
