The area has many old neighbourhoods and monuments, and was one of the main gathering places for the lower and middle class Chinese in Kuala Lumpur in the 20th century. However, since the 1990s, many of the local Chinese have gradually moved to the neighbouring areas of Jalan Tiong Lai and Ampang due to improved economic conditions, and many of the upper floors of the shophouses have been rented out by foreign workers from other Southeast and South Asian countries, forming one of the main gathering places for foreign workers in Kuala Lumpur today.
