At TIFR, chemists design new materials based on a rational approach which hinges on exploring a molecular link between understanding molecular interactions and chemical function. Scientists exquisitely address the governing chemical principles of living systems and explore disease causing mechanisms while also developing new methods to probe weak and strong interactions in complex molecular systems. All these efforts ultimately pave way for development of novel materials with exotic properties, of value to chemical and solar energy industries as well as for healthcare applications. TIFR chemists are leaders in state-of-the-art experimental techniques such as synthetic chemistry, high field NMR, high resolution mass spectrometry, ultrafast lasers and single molecule methodologies.

The cutting edge chemistry research activities are pursued in two campuses under the TIFR umbrella: the Main Campus in Mumbai at the Department of Chemical Sciences and at the TIFR Center for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad.

Department of Chemical Sciences, Mumbai

The Department of Chemical Sciences strives to promote excellence in research at the frontiers of chemical physics, theoretical chemistry, biophysics, photochemistry, synthetic chemistry, bio-molecular imaging, bio-inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry and nanocatalysis with an underlying interdisciplinary approach. Faculty members are engaged in exploring fundamental aspects of the chemistry and producing tools and technologies associated with new materials e.g. optical bio-imaging probes, next generation chemotherapeutics and energy efficient catalysts.

TIFR Center for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad

Research at TIFR, Hyderabad spans all areas of chemistry which include synthesis of new inorganic and organic molecules, electrocatalysis, bio-molecular structure determination, optical spectroscopy and technology development. Faculty members are strongly collaborative and their interdisciplinary approach comprehensively addresses scientific questions, providing opportunities for scientists to engage in and contribute to each other’s research; thus, presenting a unique opportunity in the context of Indian science.
